SPEX 8000系列高能量球磨机集强力冲击、研磨及振动等高能动作于一体，研磨罐在周期性运动过程中，研磨球高速旋转运动与样品相互撞击，达到研细样品的目的。高能量效率的球磨机能够在较短的时间内向被球磨粉末输送较高的机械能量，使被磨的材料在较短是时间内实现机械合金化（机械活化），甚至形成纳米晶或非晶材料，并减少材料的氧化和污染。
机械合金研磨是一种固态粉末制程技术，主要涉及对粉末粒子在高能球磨机中反复进行熔结、断裂、再熔结的过程。早期该技术主要用于航天领域的镍基、铁基之氧化物散布強化（ oxide-dispersion strengthened）合金上，如今已能用于利用混合纯元素或预合金化粉末来制造平衡与非平衡相合金。非平衡相制造主要有过饱和固溶体、介稳材料、准结晶相和纳米及粉末合金的制备。对涉及机械合金化过程和其变量的探讨，可以回顾这些领域以及有序金属间化合物无序化和材料的机械化学合成的最新进展。通过对粉末研磨过程中易产生杂质和污染物这通常令人头疼问题的分析，建议采用某些方法可以减少甚至避免杂质和污染难题.
