Most regulation mechanisms of living organisms occur at molecular level through large molecular assemblies. Such "molecular machines" are usually in the range of 10 to 100 nanometers scale and their architecture can be studied by cryoelectron microscopy (cryoEM) in a frozen-hydrated state. This article gives a short introduction to this field of structural biology and describes some steps of image processing techniques used in conjunction with cryoEM. For a more complete introduction to 3D cryoEM and image processing techniques we recommend the new edition of Joachim Frank's book . |
